TS TT Anxiety Frienemy or Frenemy

Introduction

Hey there, fellow warriors of the mind! Today, we’re diving headfirst into the intriguing world of anxiety. Buckle up, because we’re about to uncover whether anxiety is a frenemy (a friend-enemy combo) or just a plain old frienemy (a friend you secretly wish would take a long vacation).

Why should we care, you ask? Well, my lovely readers, anxiety is that pesky little gremlin that sneaks into our lives, wreaking havoc on our peace of mind. In this post, we’re going to unravel the mysteries of anxiety, learn how to manage it like the bosses we are, and even throw in some fantastic suggestions.

So, grab a cup of tea, coffee or whisky (whatever your jam is), find your comfiest chair, and let’s embark on this wild and insightful ride together!

Anxiety – The Sneaky Little Trouble-Maker

Alright, let’s start with the basics. Anxiety is like that annoying neighbor who constantly knocks on your door at the most inconvenient times. It’s that nagging feeling of worry, fear, and unease that creeps into your mind and sets up camp without asking for permission.

But hey, don’t fret just yet! Understanding anxiety is crucial, because knowledge is power. We’ll take a moment to define anxiety, and trust me, it’s vital to grasp why taming this beast is as important as finding a unicorn in your backyard.

Now, anxiety may seem like a modern phenomenon, but let me assure you, it’s been around longer than those old socks hiding in the back of your drawer. Throughout history, humans have grappled with this formidable foe, however the origin of its role was indeed profound. When we needed to flee saber-toothed tigers or other terrifying predators, anxiety was our best friend. It helped us survive.

Today, most of us are less likely (who am I kidding, never likely!) to come face to face with a saber-toothed tiger and we spend the majority of our days seated, behind screens or on calls where our bodies are dumping the delightful (not even close) cocktail of the “fight or flight” chemicals because we have a fear of being judged, or rejected or failure. A far cry from a life or death situation, wouldn’t you say?

So why should we care about this sneaky trouble-maker? Well, anxiety isn’t just a pesky inconvenience—it can significantly affect our mental and physical health. Harvard Medical School states that chronic activation anxiety can lead to increased stress levels, disrupted sleep patterns, and even compromised immune systems. So, understanding anxiety and finding effective ways to manage it is crucial for our overall well-being.

According to Healthline, anxiety can take a toll on our central nervous system. When we experience anxiety, our bodies enter a state of heightened alertness, leading to increased stress levels. This prolonged stress response can result in various physiological effects, such as an elevated heart rate, rapid breathing, and muscle tension.

Additionally, anxiety can disrupt our sleep patterns, making it difficult to get the restful sleep our bodies and minds need to function optimally. Sleep disturbances caused by anxiety can exacerbate fatigue, impair concentration, and negatively impact our overall cognitive performance.

Moreover, research suggests that chronic anxiety may compromise our immune systems. When we’re under constant stress and anxiety, our bodies produce an excess of stress hormones like cortisol, which can impair the immune response and make us more susceptible to illnesses.

All a bit of overkill if you ask me! ?

Understanding the profound impact of anxiety on our mental and physical health is crucial. It emphasizes the importance of seeking effective ways to manage anxiety and prioritize our overall well-being. By addressing and managing anxiety, we can strive for a healthier, more balanced life.

Buckle up as we navigate the twists and turns of anxiety and equip ourselves with the knowledge to outsmart this sneaky trouble-maker. Together, we’ll discover the keys to unlock a more peaceful and fulfilling life.

Wrangling Anxiety – A Wild Ride of Strategies

Alright, folks, it’s time to put on our anxiety-fighting capes and dive into the magical world of anxiety management. This is where the real action happens!

We’re going to break it down step by step because, let’s face it, nobody wants to get lost in a labyrinth of self-help jargon. We’ll provide you with clear and concise instructions, minus the unnecessary fluff that’ll only leave you more confused than a penguin at the Sahara.

These anxiety-busting strategies will leave anxiety scratching its head in bewilderment, like a hamster on a wheel spinning out of control. So, without further ado, here they are:

Take a Breather: When anxiety strikes, pause and take a few deep breaths. Deep breathing exercises can help activate the body’s relaxation response, calming the mind and soothing those racing thoughts.

Challenge Negative Thoughts: Don’t let anxiety run the show with its negative narratives. Challenge those pesky thoughts by questioning their validity and replacing them with more positive and realistic perspectives. A helpful question that has helped me in this eventful journey is “Is it real?”. Let me explain – you’re questioning the threat. If you’re about to do a presentation and anxiety has taken over your voice, heart rate and sweat glands, ask yourself if the threat is real? And whilst a fear of judgement is nothing to underestimate, it is not a life or death situation and I can assure you, it does not warrant the level of anxiety you’re feeling in that moment. (nor is it remotely pleasant!)

Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness practices to anchor yourself in the present moment. Whether it’s meditation, yoga, or simply being aware of your surroundings, mindfulness can help reduce anxiety by redirecting your focus away from worries. I know you’ve heard it all before – but it works! Tip – if you have an Apple Watch, it offers a Mindfulness Minute where you can reflect for 1 minute or breathe for 1 minute. Is helpful (and quite naggy!) for when you need to ground yourself.

Get Moving: Physical activity is not just great for your physical health; it’s also a powerful antidote to anxiety. Engage in regular exercise to release those feel-good endorphins and boost your mood. Before you throw your pen at the screen, I know this is not for everyone. But a short, slow walk every day (consistency!) helps… you don’t need to sign up for your nearest cross fit gym and spend the next week walking like a new-born calf.

Prioritize Self-Care: Treat yourself with kindness and make self-care a priority. Take time for activities you enjoy, pamper yourself, and ensure you’re getting sufficient rest, nourishment, and quality sleep. Do it!

Reach Out for Support: Don’t face anxiety alone. Reach out to trusted friends, family, a therapist (like me ?) who can provide a listening ear and guidance. Sometimes, simply talking about your worries can alleviate the burden.

Challenge Your Comfort Zone: Push the boundaries of your comfort zone and confront anxiety-inducing situations gradually. By exposing yourself to what triggers anxiety in a controlled manner, you can build resilience and reduce anxiety over time. Now don’t go and throw yourself into a pit of snakes, if that is what triggers your anxiety… baby steps!! Challenging your comfort zone is good for a plethora of reasons, one being a Growth Mindset (more to come…).
